Tesla Will Open A New Battery Factory In Germany By 2027
Tesla will open its own battery cell factory in 2027 on the site of the existing Gigafactory near Berlin, Germany. Elon Musk predicted the arrival of this factory back in 2014, though it took a bit longer than he anticipated.
In Grünheide, east of Berlin, Tesla has been building the Model Y since 2022 and is also working on expansion. This will arrive in 2027 in the form of a long-awaited battery factory, according to LinkedIn. It’s not (yet) an official Tesla statement, but it does come from Tesla’s Manufacturing Technician, Mirco Colditz. Colditz even dares to tag the Senior Director of Manufacturing at Giga Berlin in the post, which gives it a bit more weight. Colditz states that 8 GWh of batteries should be produced in Germany by 2027. This would refer to the actual production of the battery cells, not the assembly of battery packs, which Tesla has been doing in Grünheide for some time.
Tesla will essentially be producing almost everything needed for a Model Y here in one location, a first in Europe. While there are already battery factories, battery cells produced in Europe, and, of course, car factories, nowhere else is everything, from cell to finished product, produced in one place.
Interesting detail: Tesla CEO Elon Musk already expressed his desire to establish a European battery factory in 2014. While the current assembly plant is practically sufficient to fulfill that “promise,” the arrival of the battery cell factory leaves no doubt whatsoever. Incidentally, it has taken a bit longer than anticipated: in 2014, Musk still believed it would be completed within six years or so.
