BMW has quietly closed another important chapter in its history. After the first 8 Series disappeared from showrooms in the late 1990s, the same fate has now befallen its modern reincarnation. The second-generation BMW 8 Series, introduced in 2018, has been quietly removed from the range, bringing to an end the era of one of the brand’s most luxurious and ambitious models.

Although the name evoked the iconic original 8 Series from the nineties, with its distinctive folding headlights and a structure without a B-pillar, the newer “eight” was essentially the successor to the former 6 Series. This was also reflected in the range of body versions, as buyers were offered a coupé, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupé. The engine range was also very large, from the inline six-cylinder 840i to the powerful M850i with a V8 engine to the extreme M8 with more than 600 hp. The range even included a rare diesel 840d, and electrification was completely absent, with no plug-in hybrid or “greener” variants.

It was precisely this combination of powerful ICEs that brought high CO₂ to the entire company’s portfolio, high prices, and the fact that the model was already a niche product from the start that clearly indicated a limited lifespan for the 8 Series. BMW is not planning a direct successor for now. Although ideas about a future top model or even the return of the 6 Series in some new form are mentioned in the corridors, the brand’s focus is currently strongly focused on the Neue Klasse models and the electric future.

It is also interesting that with this change, BMW is further narrowing its convertible offering. After the withdrawal of the 8 Series Convertible, only the outgoing Z4 and 4 Series Convertible remain in the offer. The offer of new convertibles is getting thinner anyway, and the departure of the 8 Series only confirms that luxury cars without a roof are also finding it increasingly difficult to find a place in the modern automotive industry.
