Lamborghini has officially canceled plans to launch its first all-electric model, the Lanzador EV, earlier slated to launch in 2029, with the Italian brand now focusing on plug-in hybrid models.

Speaking with The Sunday Times, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann cited “close to zero” interest in battery-electric supercars among its wealthy clients.

“Investing heavily in full-EV development when the market and customer base are not ready would be an expensive hobby, and financially irresponsible towards shareholders, customers [and] to our employees and their families,” he said.

“Plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds, combining the agility and low-rev boost of electric battery technology with the emotion and power output of an internal combustion engine,” he added.

The reportedly discontinued 2-seater Lanzador, which made its debut as a Concept at the 2023 Monterey Car Week, previewed a purely-electric production vehicle that Lamborghini will present in 2029.

“For us, the fourth model is the absolutely logical extension of the existing portfolio – the perfect link between Urus and our super sports cars,” the CEO of Automobili Lamborghini said at the time before the shift to plug-in hybrid models.

Last year, Lamborghini delivered a record 10,747 cars worldwide, with the marque noting that the results were boosted by the “success of the brand’s hybridisation strategy, which has been met with enthusiasm by Lamborghini customers across the globe.”

Key contributors to Lamborghini’s achievement last year were the $252,000 Urus SE, a plug-in hybrid version of its best-selling Super SUV, and the Revuelto, the brand’s first V12 HPEV hybrid super sports car, priced from $500,000.

Also available is the Huracan replacement, the V8-hybrid Temerario which made its debut in 2024 as the second model in Lamborghini’s High Performance Electrified Vehicle (HPEV) range after Revuelto.
