Tafawa Balewa made an official visit to America in July 1961 at the invitation of the president John F. Kennedy.
During his visit between July 25 and July 28, Kennedy and Balewa discussed matters of mutual and National interest.
As Prime Minister of Nigeria, Tafawa Balewa used a ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce Phantom V as official car.
The customized 1960 Rolls-Royce Phantom V was delivered new to Nigeria in 1960 ahead of the country’s independence.



Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa made an official visit to America in July 1961 at the invitation of the president of the United States of America, John F. Kennedy.
Waiting at the airport to greet him are the Vice president of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson, American ambassador to Nigeria, Joseph Palmer II, as well as other high-ranking American officials.


Footage shared shows the moment Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was chauffeured in Cadillac Fleetwood limousine into the White House were he met with the president of the United States of America, John F. Kennedy.


During his 3-day visit between July 25 and July 28, US President Kennedy and Prime Minister Tafa Balewa discussed matters of mutual and National interest.
Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who served as the first and only Prime Minister of Nigeria upon independence, played important roles in the continent’s formative indigenous rule.


As Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa used a ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce Phantom V, which was delivered new to Nigeria in 1960 ahead of the country’s independence.
The customized 1960 Rolls-Royce Phantom V used by Tafawa Balewa as an official car came up for sale in 2011 in far away in France. Then, the French auctioneer estimated that the Phantom will sell for between €70,000 – €90,000.
