New Hydrogen Powered Hyundai Nexo SUV Set For 2025 Launch

During the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Hyundai shed light on the great future it sees for the application of hydrogen. Hyundai envisions a hydrogen society with a hydrogen economy. It wants to make hydrogen itself and distribute it around the world in a ‘fair and safe way’. It even wants to generate biogas from organic waste, biogas to be used in the production of hydrogen. Trucks, trams, buses, and ships with hydrogen technology play a major role in Hyundai’s hydrogen future. But also cars.

In 2022, it was announced that the Hyundai Nexo, an electrically powered SUV with a fuel cell, would not be replaced for the time being. An improved version would be released in 2024, later than the brand had initially planned. What seems? Hyundai is also not going to make it to 2024. During the CES in Las Vegas, Hyundai’s Chang Hwan Kim indicated that a completely new Hyundai Nexo will be available in 2025. Chang Hwan Kim is not the least; his job title is almost a complete sentence: Hyundai Senior Vice President and Head of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Development.

The current Hyundai Nexo was presented in 2018 during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We would therefore not be surprised if the new Nexo makes its debut in January 2025 during the same technology fair. The Nexo succeeded the iX35 Fuel Cell and has three storage tanks on board that together can store 6.33 kilos (156.6 liters) of hydrogen. The Nexo has a 163-hp electric motor and a small 1.56-kWh battery. The range is 665 kilometers.
