Nissan Set To Us LiDar On Its ProPilot Next Phase

Nissan has been making waves since 2018 with ProPilot, a suite of driver-assistance systems that allows the car to steer and brake independently, among other things. Now, Propilot is entering its next phase, and Nissan apparently wants to use lidars for that as well.

While Nissan still tries its best to generate attention with that catchy name and a blue button, Propilot is now simply one of the many package names for driver assistance systems that practically every car manufacturer offers.

Perhaps that’s why Nissan wants to take the next step in this area, and is now announcing the next-generation ProPilot. This system is scheduled to be available in Japan starting in the 2027 model year and will undoubtedly come to our region after that. Nissan isn’t going into details yet, but it does promise that Propilot will utilize AI from Wayve, which specializes in automated driving.

Nissan is also talking about Lidar sensors, so don’t be surprised if a Nissan soon sports a noticeable “pimple” above the windshield, just like a Volvo or a Nio. This pimple contains a combination of mirrors and lasers that can measure distances to objects when the light is too low or the distance too great for a camera, so the idea is already promising. In addition to Lidar sensors, Nissan’s prototypes also have five radars and eleven cameras, most of which are located on and around the front of the car.
