No Space For Cullinan, Bentayga In Paris As Bike-friendly City Triples Parking Fees For Heavy SUVs
No space for Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Bentley Bentayga in Paris as bike-friendly votes to triple parking fees for SUVs.
Residents voted to triple the parking fees for heavy SUVs weighing 1,600 kilograms (3,527 pounds) or more.
54.5% voted in favor of the new ruling, while 45.5% went against it. 5.7% of the 1.3 million eligible voters cast their vote.
SUVs weighing 1,600 kg (3,527 pounds) or more must pay €18 per hour when parking within the city center.
In addition, heavy Electric Vehicles (EVs) that weigh 2,000 kilograms (4,409 lbs) or more also get the same penalty.
Residents in Paris over the weekend voted to triple the parking fees for high-riding and heavy SUVs as the French capital presses on with long-term plans to become a fully bikeable city.
According to the official results, some 54.5% voted in favor of the new ruling, while 45.5% went against it. But only 5.7% of the 1.3 million eligible voters actually cast their vote.
Now, SUVs weighing 1,600 kg or more (3,527 pounds) must pay €18 per hour when parking within the city center (up from €6), and €12 outside the city center. EVs that weigh 2,000 kg (4,409 lbs) or more also get the same penalty.
“We’re proud of having posed an eminently environmental question at a time the environment is presented as the source of all evil,” said, Mayor Anne Hidalgo, said after the results were published.
“It’s a form of resistance here in Paris to this very concerning movement,” Hidalgo, who believe big and bulky vehicles pollute the environment more, added.
“Do you really need a SUV in Paris?,” a 27 year old voter told Reuters at a voting station, adding that “I carry my son on a bike, we found solutions.”
Popular ICE-powered vehicles that will be affected includes fast-selling SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan, though their parking fees won’t be a problem for the owners of the seven-figure SUVs.
