The Spanish government has announced plans to offer free rail journeys for multi-journey tickets on certain services from 1st September to the end of the year, amid rising cost of living.
From September until the end of the year, passengers will be able to travel across various trains operated by public train network Renfe for absolutely nothing.
The free train rides apply to multi-trip journey tickets (10 return trips) and medium-distance routes – a journey that is approximately less than 300km.
But the measure, which aims to save money and environment, excludes single-journey tickets or long-distance travels, according to Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
The Spanish Ministry of Transport, in a statement, stated that :
“This measure encourages to the maximum the use of this type of collective public transport to guarantee the needed daily commute with a safe, reliable, comfortable, economic and sustainable means of transportation, amid the extraordinary circumstances of the steady increase of energy and fuel prices,”.
