Significantly Lower Car Tariffs As The US And South Korea Strike A Trade Deal
After months of intense negotiations marked by high-stakes discussions and strategic diplomacy, the United States and South Korea reached a significant milestone on Wednesday by finalizing a monumental $350 billion trade agreement.
This landmark pact not only signifies a strengthening of economic ties between the two nations but also promises to open new avenues for collaboration and growth in various industries.
President Donald Trump announced the agreement with South Korea during a dinner hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. This is good news, among other things, for South Korean automakers, including Hyundai and Kia.
“We’ve reached a trade deal,” Trump said. Seoul will spend $150 billion on shipbuilding in the US and another $200 billion in additional investments in the country. Under the trade agreement, US import tariffs on cars from South Korea will be reduced from 25 percent to 15 percent.
For Trump, the agreement represents another success he can add to the list of deals he struck during his trip to Asia. The most important event of that trip will take place on Thursday, when he meets Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
