Stellantis To Continue Offering Diesel Engines In Its European Lineups
Stellantis underwent huge changes during the last year. The automaker put the Hemi V8 engine back in the Ram 1500, stopped making Chrysler and Jeep plug-in hybrids, and discontinued Ram’s electric pickup truck before it even hit the market. Now the company is resurrecting—and keeping—diesel engines in Europe.
The carmaker told Reuters, “We have decided to keep diesel engines in our product portfolio—and in some cases to increase our powertrain offering.”
Stellantis said it is doing this because “we are focused on customer demand.”
According to the report, Stellantis has been quietly reviving this powertrain in at least seven European models from the end of 2025, even though diesel sales have fallen in the past decade since the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal. Diesel engines accounted for only 7.7% of new car sales on the continent in 2025.
The publication announced that Opel, Peugeot, and Citroen models are getting diesel options again. The carmaker also said it would continue to produce diesel versions of the DS 7 and the Alfa Romeo Tonale, Giulia, and Stelvio “in response to ongoing customer demand.”
