Suicide Doors (coach doors) are coming to Genesis production cars ‘sooner than you think,’ Design Boss says.

B-pillarless suicide doors was first seen on Genesis Neolun Concept unveiled at the 2024 New York International Auto Show.

Neolun Concept previews Genesis’ first full-size SUV and a model that will reportedly slot above the GV80 in the lineup.

Production model will likely arrive as the Genesis GV90 that will rival Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 and Range Rover SV.

Earlier this week, Genesis unveiled the Neolun Concept at the 2024 New York International Auto Show. The Neolun Concept previews the company’s first full-size SUV and an all-new model that will reportedly slot above the GV80 in the lineup.

“The Neolun Concept was inspired by Korea’s iconic moon-shaped porcelain jars,” said Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke. “It’s the epitome of timeless design and sophisticated craftsmanship.”

While the Neolun Concept is packed with several exterior features, including a captivating two-tone scheme called “Midnight Black” and “Majestic Blue,” the most prominent are the distinctive coach doors (suicide doors).

In a statement, Genesis, the Hyundai Motors luxury brand, said that the B-pillarless suicide doors will be seen in future Genesis production vehicles.

When theDrive asked Sangyup Lee, the global head of design for Genesis (and Hyundai), about the Neolun concept’s suicide doors making it to production vehicles, he said :

“We’ve been doing this study for the last five years, and actually we’re making huge progress,” Lee told The Drive.

“You see a lot of concept cars with these suicide doors, but you never see it make it to production. This is a challenge. We’re making big progress, and sooner or later it will happen.”

Speaking further on the challenge of implementing the suicide doors on a vehicle that has no B-pillar (like the BMW i3 electric vehicle), Lee said :

“Anybody can do a pillarless design, but what if a car rolls over? It has to be as strong as a car with a B-pillar. This is our challenge. Stay tuned, I’ll keep you posted. This is the vision,” remarked Lee.

While Genesis Neolun Concept’s design was inspired by the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the production model will likely arrive as the Genesis GV90 to rival Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 and Range Rover SV.
