Tesla’s Electric Vehicle Dominance Is Over, Says BMW

BMW has big aspirations for electric vehicles, predicting that by 2030, at least one out of every two vehicles sold will be electric.

The German automaker plans to challenge Tesla’s domination of the US electric vehicle industry as sales expand. Last year, Tesla put an end to the Bavarian company’s supremacy over the US premium automobile market.

BMW plans to sell 200,000 electric vehicles this year, more than double the number sold last year. While this is still a long way from Tesla’s projected sales of over 930,000 in 2021 and a million or more in 2022, BMW officials seem optimistic that Tesla will lose its competitive advantage.

According to Automotive News, BMW Group sales chief Pieter Nota told US journalists at a press event that the business will focus “on a very robust and fast ramp-up of electric vehicles.”

He went on to say that EV customers were very much early adopters in recent years, but that EVs are now appealing to a much broader audience.

The Model 3-rivaling i4 fastback and the iX SUV, which targets the Model X, are two new weapons for BMW against Tesla. The i4 is the “ultimate electric driving machine,” according to Nota, and the “electric vehicle that BMW customers anticipate.”

The i4 and iX order books are already overflowing, with US dealers reporting hundreds of orders for the two vehicles. Furthermore, Nota stated that the order time is currently approaching six months.

BMW’s electric onslaught in the United States is just getting started with the i4 and iX. Over the following two years, three additional BMW Group EVs will arrive in the United States.

BMW’s electric onslaught in the United States is just getting started with the i4 and iX. Over the next two years, three additional BMW Group EVs will arrive in the United States: the i7 premium sedan later this year, the i5 big sedan in 2023, and the all-electric MINI Countryman in 2024.

Pieter Nota’s optimistic statements were echoed by BMW CEO Oliver Zipse.
