The Hungarian Mercedes Factory Is Leading The Way In Europe

Mercedes’ car factory in Kecskemet, Hungary, is a benchmark for success in Europe, said the German giant’s CEO Ola Kallenius.

At the grand opening of the factory expansion, he said it was “proof that top-notch Mercedes-Benz quality and top-notch efficiency can go hand in hand.”

According to him, the costs with which the Kecskemet plant operates “set standards in Europe.”

In the next few years, Mercedes plans to double the share of production in low-wage European countries, from 15 to 30 percent.

Mercedes CFO Harald Wilhelm pointed out that the costs of the Kecskemét factory are 70 percent lower than in Germany.

Mercedes has expanded the factory it opened in 2012 in the town about 80 kilometers south of Budapest, and it is now the largest car factory in the country. When it reaches its full potential of 400,000 vehicles a year, it will also be the largest Mercedes factory in Europe.

The German company has invested around one billion euros in two new body shops and assembly lines. In addition, the factory has received a new press, a new paint shop, and a battery assembly plant.

The A-Class and the GLB SUV model are already produced in Kecskemét, and now the electric C-Class is joining the range.

In the old part of the factory, cars with gasoline and electric engines are assembled, and in the new part, only electric ones are assembled.
