Toyota Starts Production Of 5th-gen Hybrid Powertrain For The New Corolla

Toyota starts production of the new 5th-gen Hybrid Powertrain for the new Corolla Hatchback, Corolla Touring Sport models.

Its plant in Poland produces hybrid electric transmissions while UK plant produces the new 1.8 litre gasoline engine.

Hybrid electric transmissions is combined with new 1.8l gasoline engine to form the 5th-Gen hybrid electric powertrain.

Toyota UK produces Corolla Hatchback, Corolla Touring Sport models at its manufacturing plant at Burnaston.

Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has announced the start of production of its 5th-generation hybrid powertrains for the new Corolla at its manufacturing plants in Poland (TMMP) and the UK (TMUK).

While TMMP produces hybrid electric transmissions, the TMUK produces the new 1.8 litre gasoline engine, which are combined to form the 5th generation hybrid electric powertrain.

The total power of hybrid drive system with the 1.8 litre engine is 140-horsepower, which reduces the 0-100km/h (0-60mph) acceleration time by 1.7 seconds, to 9.2 seconds.

The new 5th generation hybrid technology improves performance and reduces CO2 emissions. It replaces the 4th generation systems previously produced at its plant in Poland and UK since 2018 and 2016 respectively.

“Toyota’s affordable, low-emission hybrid electrified vehicles have an important role to play in our pan-European multi-technology strategy which seeks to help everyone lower their carbon emissions.

“Hybrid technology now features in 70% and 85% respectively of the engines and transmissions produced at TMMP and TMUK, which is a reflection of the ever-growing customer demand for Toyota hybrid products”, says Marvin Cooke, the Executive Vice President for Manufacturing, Toyota Motor Europe.

Toyota UK produces the Corolla Hatchback and Corolla Touring Sport models at its vehicle manufacturing plant at Burnaston, Derbyshire, while the petrol and hybrid engines are produced at its engine manufacturing plant at Deeside, North Wales.

In 2021, TMUK produced 131,024 vehicles and 257,395 engines for export and local assembly at its plants across the world. The plant currently employs over 3,000 members.
