Two-Thirds Of German Used Cars Dealers Don’t Sell EVs

In Germany, sales of electric cars fell the most in 2024, if you look at the European market. Now comes the news that 68.7 percent of traders have stopped trading in electric cars because they believe it is just a loss-making business. The research was carried out by the magazine Kfz-Betrieb.

Car dealers can only get rid of used electric cars by offering deep discounts. In June 2024 alone, 80 percent of retailers reported selling electric cars at a loss. Of the car dealers surveyed, 51.1 percent state that using electric cars is currently unacceptable, HAK Magazine reports.

According to the German organization Deutsche Automobil Treuhand, many consumers are afraid to buy used electric cars because of high prices and outdated technology. Specifically, new generations of electric cars with longer ranges, better batteries, and more efficient engines are appearing on the market.

Car manufacturers have also started to act and start to take seriously the problems that have arisen with used electric cars. Audi and BMW are two companies that have started training their dealers to become better at selling used electric cars. Another way to solve the problem is to offer a five-year warranty on selected models, which Mercedes did, and Volkswagen has an idea of how to solve the problem.

In the future, Volkswagen Financial Services will keep electric vehicles as long as possible to be able to offer customers attractive leasing contracts for used electric cars, Volkswagen announced.
