Cabinless self-driving delivery van drags a scooter along the road in China – but who is at fault?

According to local reports, the electric scooter was lying on the road after an earlier accident.

Oncoming autonomous van reportedly snagged part of the scooter’s wheels while trying to navigate around it.





Equipped with advanced sensors and high-resolution video surveillance cameras, the truck automatically avoids obstacles.

The autonomous trucks are also designed to stop automatically at Red traffic lights and gives way to pedestrians.

Designed to deliver about 1,000 parcels, the vehicle can reach 24.9 mph and cover about 180-km in a single trip.

A trending video shows a cabinless self-driving delivery van operated by logistics service provider, ZTO Express, dragging a fallen e-scooter in the city of Xi’an in China, after the latter blocked its way following an earlier accident.

According to local reports, the electric scooter was lying on the road after an earlier accident before the oncoming autonomous van snagged part of its wheels while trying to navigate around it.

Though not shown in the short clip shared, the driverless van reportedly dragged the scooter for a distance before stopping.

ZTO Express introduced the cabinless self-driving vans last year to reduce the workload of its employees and increase the efficiency of deliveries in suburban and rural areas.

Designed to deliver about 1,000 parcels, the cabin-less vehicle can reach speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour (24.9 mph) and cover about 180 kilometers in a single trip.

Before its introduction, the driverless truck, developed by autonomous driving company Jiushi Intelligent Technology Co., was successfully tested on many difficult road sections.

Equipped with advanced sensors and high-resolution video surveillance cameras, the truck automatically avoids obstacles, stops automatically at Red traffic lights and gives way to pedestrians.
