Volkswagen And SAIC Motors To Develop EVs And PHEVs Via Joint Venture
This year marks forty years since the Volkswagen Group started a joint venture with SAIC Motor in China. To celebrate, the two companies are entering into close cooperation in the field of plug-in hybrids and will also develop new EVs together.
The Volkswagen Group brands sell their models in China under various, once mandatory, joint ventures with local partners. We mention FAW-Volkswagen, the partnerships that Audi has with FAW, and SAIC, the relatively young JAC-Volkswagen that will build the electric Cupra Tavascan and the Volkswagen variant of it that is not coming to Europe. The largest joint venture partner is SAIC Motor. The Volkswagen Group first entered into a partnership with SAIC Motor in 1984 and is now expanding that partnership.
Volkswagen Group, SAIC Motor, Volkswagen China Investment, Volkswagen China Technology and SAIC-Volkswagen have jointly signed a large number of signatures on an agreement that should lead to the development of new models. SAIC Motor and Volkswagen will develop three plug-in hybrid models and two fully electric cars ‘in China and Germany’ in the coming years. The new models will be launched on the market between 2026 and 2030, but which brands will get which models is not further explained. It is also not entirely clear whether the models to be developed will only be launched on the market in China.
In May, Audi and SAIC Motor already agreed that they would jointly develop the Audi Advanced Digitized Platform for EVs, a ‘digital platform’ that will be installed under the first car in 2025. Little is known about this either. Last year, it was announced that the Volkswagen Group would develop cars with the Chinese Xpeng. There are many Chinese partners for the Volkswagen Group.
