Volvo Sold More Than 700,000 New Cars Globally Last Year

Volvo reports that it sold 763,389 new cars globally last year. That was eight percent more than in 2023. There have never been so many. Of those more than 760,000 new passenger cars, 175,194 were fully electric (+54 percent). That means that almost a quarter (23.1 percent) of all Volvos sold last year were electric. Volvo also sold 177,593 plug-ins (+16 percent) and 410,602 units with a mild or non-mild hybrid combustion engine. It is this category that the increased EV and plug-in sales are taking a bite out of. Volvo sold 7 percent fewer cars with a (mild-hybrid) combustion engine in 2024.

The almost eight-year-old Volvo XC60 was, as in previous years, the most popular new Volvo worldwide. Volvo sold 230,853 units of it. One in three (30.2 percent) of all cars that Volvo sold in 2024 was an XC60. The Volvo XC40/EX40 follows in second place with 173,890 units sold worldwide. Interesting: in 2023 Volvo sold considerably more XC40s/EX40s (200,670 units). The EX30 undoubtedly took a bite out of the sales of that duo. Despite its relatively old age, the Volvo XC90 was good for 108,621 units sold. That was slightly more than in 2023 (107,549).
