2022 Volkswagen GTI And Golf R Are Being Recalled Due To A Loose Engine Cover

Volkswagen is recalling 3404 GTIs and 865 Golf Rs from the 2022 model year due to a loose engine cover that might melt and cause a fire.

According to the NHTSA, the cover can come loose during “certain driving maneuvers with extremely high acceleration forces.”

Until a revised part is available, Volkswagen will remove the engine covers from the affected vehicles.

The eighth-generation Volkswagen GTI and Golf R were only released late last year, yet the spicy hatchbacks are already being recalled.

2022 Volkswagen GTI

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ordered a recall for more than 4000 units of the 2022 GTI and Golf R due to an engine cover that might come away and melt if it comes into contact with specific sections of the powertrain, increasing the danger of a fire in the engine compartment.

According to an updated report on March 21, 4269 vehicles are compromised, including 3404 GTIs and 865 Golf Rs. During “particular driving maneuvers with very high accelerating forces,” the engine cover may fall unfastened, which is likely a typical occurrence when driving sporty Volkswagen hatchbacks.

The NHTSA advises that if the unfastened cover comes into touch with hot materials beneath the hood, such as the turbocharger, it might melt and create a fire. Owners may smell a burning odor from the engine bay if the cover breaks loose from its fixation points, according to the organization.

Volkswagen has announced that it will remove the engine cover from affected vehicles until it develops a new part.

Owners will be able to return to the dealership and have the better cover installed for free once it is ready.

Meanwhile, the lack of an engine cover shouldn’t have a significant impact on the driving experience, though the car may sound noisier without the sound deadening that conventional engine covers provide.

According to the source, Volkswagen began producing GTIs and Golf Rs without engine covers in February 2022. Volkswagen will begin sending recall warnings to owners of affected vehicles on May 13.
