The F1 car, with chassis no. 01, was Hamilton’s 2010 Turkish Grand Prix race-winning McLaren MP4-25A.
Hamilton’s Championship-winning McLaren MP4-25A is now the fourth most expensive F1 car ever sold at auction.
Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F2002 and F2001 F1 cars were sold by RM Sotheby’s for $6.6m and $7.5m respectively.
The most expensive F1 car ever to be publicly auctioned is a 1954 Mercedes W196R sold by Bonhams for $29.6m in 2013.
An unnamed Formula One fan has splashed £4,836,000 ($5,699,000) to own Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren MP4-25A F1 at a special RM Sotheby’s auction held at Silverstone.
The open auction took place after the first-ever sprint qualifying race for the British Grand Prix. The over 140,000 spectators at the event also got the chance to see the race car do a couple of laps.
The F1 car, with chassis no. 01, was Hamilton’s 2010 Turkish Grand Prix race-winning McLaren MP4-25A.
It is the first Lewis Hamilton F1 car to ever be offered for public sale and the selling price is a record for a McLaren Formula Car.
The McLaren MP4-25A is now the fourth most expensive F1 car ever sold at auction, just behind Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F2002 and F2001. The two F1 cars were sold by RM Sotheby’s for $6,643,750 and $7,500,000 respectively.
The most expensive F1 car ever to be publicly auctioned is a 1954 Mercedes W196R that was sold by Bonhams for $29,650,095 (£19,601,500) in 2013.
The Mercedes W196R took Juan Manuel Fangio to the second of his five Formula 1 titles.
