Officially named Ibrahim Babangida Bridge, the bridge, built by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, was opened for services in 1990 by the then Nigerian Military leader, Gen Ibrahim Babangida, ten years after the phase one of the project was commissioned by President Shehu Shagari in 1980.

The 11.8 km (7.3 miles) 3rd Mainland Bridge was the longest bridge in Africa until 1996 when the 20.5 km (12.7 miles) 6th October Bridge located in Cairo was completed.
