After 90 Years On Top, GM Finally Got Dethroned By Toyota As The Best-seller In America
After 90 years on top as the best-seller, GM finally got dethroned by Toyota as No. 1 automaker in the United States of America.
In the first 9-months of 2021, Toyota sold 2.332 million vehicles in the United States while GM sold 2.218 million.
General Motors’ United States’ sales were down by 13% for 2021, while Toyota’s sales was up by 10%.
In 2020, GM sold 2.55 million vehicles in the United States, compared with Toyota’s 2.11 million and Ford’s 2.04 million.
GM has been the largest seller of vehicles in the United States since 1931, when it surpassed Ford.

Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) outsold General Motors Co (GM) in the United States in 2021, marking the first time the Detroit automaker has not led the U.S. auto sales since 1931.
In the first nine months of 2021, Toyota sold 2.332 million vehicles in the United States while GM sold 2.218 million — or just over 114,000 more vehicles.

In a statement, Toyota Senior Vice President Jack Hollis said that the automaker is “grateful” for its loyal customers, but “being No. 1 is never a focus or priority.”

General Motors’ U.S. sales were down by 13% for 2021, while Toyota’s sales was up by 10%, despite the shortage of computer chips that has nearly crippled the automotive sector.
Last year was marred by a shortage of semiconductors used heavily in vehicles for making parts like touchscreens, forcing automakers to focus on their most profitable models.

Two years ago, General Motors sold a total of 2.55 million vehicles in the United States, compared with Toyota’s 2.11 million and Ford’s 2.04 million.
According to data from industry publication Automotive News, GM has been the largest seller of vehicles in the United States since 1931, when it surpassed Ford.
