Throwback : Fayose’s G-Wagon Caught Fire On Motion, Blamed Arsonist, Possible Causes

Governor Ayodele Fayose’s Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon SUV suddenly caught fire on motion in Lagos in 2017.
Though Fayose blamed the incident on arson, a problem with the electrical wiring or fuel system might have caused it.
Back in October 2017, a white Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon SUV belonging former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, suddenly burst into flames while being driven to the airport in Lagos.
Fortunately, Fayose, who was then the Governor of Ekiti State, was not in the vehicle, and no one was injured during the incident.
Reacting to the fire accident, Fayose, while speaking on a monthly Radio and Television Programme in Ado-Ekiti, thanked God for saving his life as he was meant to be in the vehicle.
He said :
“Some people went and set fire on my car. Anyway, I did not want to go into the controversy now.
“I am leaving everything in the hand of God because where there is life, there is hope. Who says I cannot even buy a better car?”
In a statement, Fayose’s spokesman, Lere Olayinka, said :
“There was an accident involving Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose’s vehicle on his way to the airport yesterday.
“Though he was meant to be in the vehicle, by providence, he was not there.
“What caused the sudden fire under the vehicle is yet to be ascertained.
‘The governor is grateful to God that no casualty was recorded. He also thanked the people who made spirited efforts to put out the fire”.
Possible causes
Though Fayose blamed the incident on arson, a problem with the electrical wiring or fuel system might have caused the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon to suddenly burst into flames.
Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Hyundai and Kia are some of automakers that have recalled their cars around the world in recent years for engine fires risk that may cause car to burst into without warning.
While proper vehicle maintenance, including inspecting the Oil and Coolant Levels as well as Tyre Pressure and Brake might go along way, it is also advisable to check online to see whether your car model, whether bought brand new or used, has been recalled for an urgent fix.
