A classic Mercedes-Benz 600 limousine reportedly used by the first and only prime minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, but which has been left to rot in a garage for over 50 years is set to return to its former glory.
The ‘rust bucket’ Grand Mercedes (W100) generated huge interest from a Twitter user, Edmund Olotu of the smalI Bag, who plans to spend about ₦6 million on purchase and restoration of the Mercedes-Benz limousine.
According to Edmund Olotu of the smalI Bag, he plans to eventually donate the restored Mercedes-Benz to ‘The Chess in Slums Africa’ (CISA) so they could drive it to locations.
This limo used to belong to a Nigerian Premier. I’d love to restore it and donate it to @chessinslums so they could drive it to locations and have kids learn how to play chess inside
It will cost 6M to purchase & restore. Happy to have a company buy it in trust as part of CSR pic.twitter.com/nKsFsVzEIj

“This limo used to belong to a Nigerian Premier. I’d love to restore it and donate it to @chess in slums so they could drive it to locations and have kids learn how to play chess inside”.
“It will cost 6M to purchase & restore. Happy to have a company buy it in trust as part of CSR. I have too many in my collection or I would have done it myself. So who would love to buy it in trust and donate it?”.
He further explained that :
“Acquisition cost is there and it’s not mine. Restoration cost has zero margin on it. Installing the right engine plus workmanship plus lubricants and hoses and brainbox is 1M, body work/paint is 1M, lights and electricals- 1.2M. Tires and wheels- 500k, interior 1.5M.. plus misc..”
Replying @elSenorPluto, a Twitter
PlutoTM, feels that Edmund Olotu of the smalI Bag’s budget will never bring the iconic Mercedes to its former glory.
“₦6m to restore this former bad boy up to standard is doubtful. Merc made this car so complicated that some features were a one-time affair for them.
“The seat, sunroof, window – are all hydraulics. But you know that already. Once the most expensive, now rusty. Time wins again.”
