China By Far The World’s Largest Car Exporter

China overtook Japan last year as the world’s largest car exporter. Exports from China continued to grow strongly compared to Japan, as new figures now show.

Last year, in the spring, it became clear that China was the world’s largest car exporter for the first time. Ultimately, it also took the lead for the first time over an entire year. Japan was relegated to second place. It didn’t stop there for the Chinese. Now it is clear that China was again at the top in the first half of 2024. Not just like that, but by a considerable margin.

Figures from the relevant authorities in both countries show that in the first six months of this year, China exported 2.34 million passenger cars and Japan 1.83 million, according to Automotive News. A difference of more than half a million cars, just as big a difference as in 2023 over the entire year. China is making good progress and is quickly gaining on Japan.

The largest Chinese car manufacturers in the first half of this year were Chery (the parent company of Omoda, among others ), SAIC (known for MG), Changan, and Volvo, the parent company of Geely. BYD was in fifth place. In Japan, Toyota is, of course, the largest, followed by Honda and Nissan.
