Volkswagen Has Ended Production Of The Legendary VR6 Engine
On December 12th, Volkswagen finished producing its iconic VR6 engine after nearly 34 years. Throughout this period, around 1.87 million VR6 engines were manufactured. This significant milestone was shared on LinkedIn by Andreas G. Schleith, the PR manager for Volkswagen Passenger Cars.
The VR6 debuted in 1991 at the Geneva Motor Show. Since then, it has been installed in numerous models, including the Passat, Corrado, Touareg, Phaeton, Transporter, Sharan, CC, Beetle and many others. It can also be found under the hood of cars from other brands from the Volkswagen Group, such as the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7, Seat Leon and Škoda Superb. Even the Mercedes-Benz Vito received this engine with certain modifications at one time.
The VR6 for the European market ceased production in the mid-2010s due to stricter environmental standards, but production continued for cars intended for the North American and Chinese markets.
Volkswagen is now switching to smaller and more fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines, which integrate better with modular platforms, allowing them to be used for dozens of models in different classes.
