Texas Man, 70, Arrested After Driving A Tesla Cybertruck Into A Lake To Test Its “Wade Mode” Feature

70 year old Texas man arrested after driving a Tesla Cybertruck pickup into a lake to test its “Wade Mode” feature. 

Driver and passengers forced to abandoned the vehicle after the Tesla Cybertruck became partially submerged at the boat ramp. 

Driver arrested on charges of operation of vehicle in closed section of park/lake and numerous water safety equipment violations.

Earlier in the week, patrol officers with Grapevine Police Department arrested a 70 year old man in Texas for intentionally driving into the lake to test the Tesla Cybertruck’s “Wade Mode” feature.

Photos shared by authorities on Facebook showed the stainless steel Tesla Cybertruck pickup truck partially submerged at the boat ramp after it became disabled and start taking on water.

According to the police department, the Cybertruck got stuck, forcing the driver and passengers abandoned the vehicle. Cybertruck’s “Wade Mode” only allows the SUV to drive through bodies of water that have a maximum depth of 81.5 cm (32 inches).

“The driver stated he intentionally drove into the lake to use the Cybertruck’s “Wade Mode” feature. The vehicle became disabled and took on water.”

“The driver and passengers abandoned the vehicle and the Grapevine Fire Department Water Rescue Team assisted in removing it from the lake.”

The driver, whose identity has not been released, was “arrested on charges of operation of vehicle in closed section of park/lake and numerous water safety equipment violations,” the police said.

“We want to remind drivers that although a vehicle may be physically capable of entering shallow freshwater areas, doing so can create legal and safety concerns under Texas law.”

Tesla Cybertruck’s “Wade Mode” feature

According to the Cybertruck Owner’s Manual, when enabled, the Wade Mode defaults the vehicle’s ride height to Very High and protects Cybertruck for up to approximately 32 in (815 mm) of water, driving at slow speeds (1-3 mph (2-5 km/h)). Wade Mode duration is limited to 30 minutes.
