Mercedes Will Continue To Produce V8s, But There May Not Be A New C63
Automakers are committing to the internal combustion engine for the next decade, with Mercedes-Benz executive Klaus Rehkugler predicting the V8 will remain viable for at least ten more years.
During a recent interview with CarExpert, Mercedes-Benz executive Klaus Rehkugler emphasized the enduring appeal of the V8 engine, particularly within the North American and Middle Eastern markets. Reflecting on his personal experience, Rehkugler noted his own affinity for V8 vehicles and expressed confidence in sustained consumer demand, stating, “Overall, I think there’s enough global demand to keep the V8 alive for at least another 10 years, but maybe not so much in Europe with stringent CO2 regulations, which are very restrictive and punitive.”
The European automotive landscape continues to face significant challenges due to rigorous environmental and safety mandates. Beyond strict emissions standards, manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz must now navigate demanding decibel limits and mandatory speed-warning technology, both of which complicate the future of high-performance internal combustion vehicles in the region.
The German automaker plans to keep V8s for another decade, but their future in the AMG C63 is uncertain due to development costs, with the company prioritizing V8s for the CLE instead.
Mercedes-Benz is pivoting to prioritize V8 engines in its CLE lineup after the four-cylinder C63 failed to impress enthusiasts. The automaker remains committed to V8 production for at least another decade to satisfy demand in North America and the Middle East, leaving the door open for a future V8-powered C-Class.
