42,300 Jobs Are Lost In The German Auto Industry
The German automotive industry continued to reduce the number of employees, and at the end of the first half of 2026, 691,500 people worked in the industry, which is 42,300 fewer than a year earlier, or 5.8 percent, according to data published today by the German statistical office Destatis.
According to the latest statistical report released by Destatis, the German automotive sector has experienced a significant downturn in its workforce, with the total number of employees plummeting to its lowest recorded level since 2005. This downward trend is particularly stark when compared to the previous year, highlighting a challenging period of contraction for one of Germany’s most critical industrial pillars. The report indicates that the industry’s staffing levels have reached a historical low point, reflecting broader shifts and economic pressures currently impacting the European automotive manufacturing landscape.
Within the broader context of these industrial staffing challenges, the most pronounced reduction in personnel was observed among the manufacturers specializing in automotive parts and accessories. According to the detailed figures provided in the latest report, this specific segment experienced a significant workforce contraction of 7.6 percent compared to the same period last year, bringing the total number of individuals employed in this sector down to 219,500. This steep decline underscores the intensifying pressure currently facing the supply chain and component manufacturing infrastructure as the German automotive industry navigates a period of substantial structural realignment.
