To combat rising thefts of Land Cruiser Prado 250 and 300 models in Australia, Toyota has introduced an optional secondary immobilizer system. This upgrade, which includes an independently powered siren, offers a more robust security alternative to previous steering wheel locks.

Toyota’s new secondary immobilizer prevents engine starts without a dedicated fob. It also adds an independently powered, battery-backed siren that triggers during unauthorized access, even if the vehicle’s main power is disconnected.

Toyota’s new secondary immobilizer is a more effective theft deterrent than the previous steering wheel lock, which was easily bypassed by power tools. The AU$1,735 system includes an independent alarm and requires five hours to install. It comes with a new fob, a steering column indicator, and a security decal, all covered by either the remaining new-car warranty or a two-year post-installation period.

Toyota Australia has stated that it is currently unaware of any vehicle thefts involving sophisticated electronic devices within this specific model range, noting that significant security enhancements were implemented for the Land Cruiser 300, Land Cruiser 250, and Hilux last year.

While overall vehicle theft in Australia rose by 2.5 percent last year, the situation has become increasingly critical in Victoria, the nation’s second-most populous state. According to reports from CarExpert, motor-theft insurance claims in the region surged by 25 percent in 2025.
