Lagos Blue Line To Add Three Stations By February 2027 As Passenger Rides Reach 9 Million In 3 Years

Lagos State is set to expand its urban rail network, with three new stations on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line scheduled to open by the end of February 2027, as the rail service records nine million passengers in its first three years of commercial operations.
The Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, announced at the 2026 Media Parley organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation that the Blue Line would be extended to FESTAC, Alakija and Trade Fair.
The new stations will increase the number of operational stations on the Blue Line from five to eight. The extension will take the rail service beyond its current western terminus at Mile 2, bringing train services closer to residents and businesses along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor.
According to Akinajo, the introduction of the three stations is expected to improve connectivity for commuters travelling through FESTAC, Alakija and the Trade Fair area, while providing more residents with an alternative to road transportation.

The Blue Line commenced commercial operations on September 4, 2023, initially connecting Marina and Mile 2 through five stations: Marina, National Theatre, Iganmu, Alaba and Mile 2. By its third anniversary in September 2026, the service had transported nine million passengers, completed 80,000 trips and recorded zero accidents, according to figures provided by LAMATA.
The nine-million-passenger milestone represents an increase of more than four million passengers compared with the total recorded at the railway’s second anniversary in September 2025. The growth reflects increasing use of the rail service as commuters seek alternatives to Lagos’ congested roads.
Beyond the rail expansion, Akinajo disclosed that four Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs) were nearing completion. She also reported considerable progress on the construction of the Marina and Mile 2 Interchange Hubs, which are expected to improve connections between rail, bus and other public transport services.
The planned extension of the Lagos Blue Line to FESTAC, Alakija and Trade Fair, alongside progress on the bus corridors and interchange hubs, forms part of Lagos State’s broader efforts to improve public transportation and strengthen connectivity between different transport modes.
