It’s no news that the Alaafin (Emperor) of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, has joined his ancestors, nearly 52 years after the First Class Yoruba King ascended the royal throne at the age of 31 years.
The late Alaafin of Oyo passed away on Friday 22 April 2022, five days after he was admitted for the treatment of a “chronic illness” at Afe Babalola Multi-System Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, AMSH.
Here are 12 things you should know about the 83 Year old monarch, including his wives and the luxury cars he rode during his reign as the Alaafin of Oyo.
1. Alaafin Adeyemi III was born Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi on 15 October 1938 to Raji Adeniran Adeyemi, who later became Alaafin in 1945, and Ibironke of Epo-Gingin.
2. 31 year old Oba Adeyemi III succeeded Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II in 1970, during the governorship of Colonel Robert Adeyinka Adebayo.
3. Adeyemi III’s predecessor, the Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II, succeeded Adeyemi III’s father, Adeyemi II, who was unceremoniously dethroned in July 1955 after ten years on the Throne.
4. The late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III was the 45th Alaafin (Emperor) of Oyo. He celebrated his 50th year on the throne in 2021.

5. As part of activities to mark his 49th coronation anniversary in 2020, the monarch installed Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate as the Mayegun of Yorubaland — a title the renowned Fuji Musician celebrated by gifting himself a brand new ₦200m Rolls-Royce Ghost.
6. The late Lamidi Adeyemi was a lover of boxing. He reportedly retired from boxing after he emerged as a monarch.
7. The Alaafin of Oyo was married to at least thirteen (13) wives, with Ayaba Abibat Adeyemi, being the most senior.
He attends most events with her or with one of the twelve junior wives that he’s also married to.
8. Oba Lamidi Adeyemi rode in several luxury cars during his reign as the Alaafin of Oyo. The monarch has turned up at ceremonies in style in some of the finest rides on the road.
Some of his cars includes a Mercedes-Benz S500 sedan, a Lexus LX 570 SUV, customized Limousine, and a Toyota Land Cruiser sports utility vehicle (SUV) – all wearing a custom number plate – “Alaafin”.
