As Telluride Soars, Kia Breaks Several U.S. Sales Records

Kia consistently claims that the market is difficult, yet the sales charts don’t support this. The carmaker recently reported its best-ever retail month in the US, continuing a trend that doesn’t appear to be stopping. Kia sold 80,502 cars in the United States in May, surpassing the 79,007 vehicles it delivered in the same month the previous year. In this market, that translates to a small but nice gain of 1.9%.
Additionally, Kia claimed that retail sales increased by 11% in the same month, surpassing the August 2025 record. The method used to count the totals determines the difference. Retail refers to vehicles sold to actual customers through dealers; fleet sales are included in the total.
Retail increased significantly due to strong dealer demand, but the overall total remained almost unchanged due to a smaller fleet. Additionally, Kia’s finest year-to-date result was made possible by the successful month. The business has sold 360,220 cars in the US through the first five months of 2026, up 2% from the same period the previous year.
The Telluride deserves a lot of the credit, as has been the case lately. In May, sales of Kia’s flagship SUV increased by 18% to 13,665 units. Additionally, the model had its best month ever, and it has now achieved record-breaking sales for five straight months.
A redesign that debuted last winter and went on sale early in 2026 allayed any worries that consumers would lose interest in the huge three-row crossover. Additionally important to Kia’s development were the Sportage and Carnival. Carnival deliveries grew 16 percent to 8,062 units in May, while Sportage sales increased 7.9 percent to 18,405 units, making it the brand’s best-selling car. In May, both models had their best-ever results.
Hybrids Hit The Big Time
However, that pales in comparison to the current state of Kia’s electrified cars. Sales of Sportage Hybrids increased by 171%, Sorento Hybrids by 101%, and Carnival Hybrids by 32%. Sales of hybrids were up a staggering 179 percent overall.
The month was particularly notable for electrified vehicles overall. According to Kia, sales of electrified models rose by 133%, resulting in the biggest monthly and year-to-date totals in the company’s history. The EV9 SUV, one of the brand’s entirely electric models, is also selling well.
However, not all models are following the trend. Sales of the EV6 fell from 801 in May of last year to 708 this year, which is not the first time it has failed. Nevertheless, Kia’s momentum was not halted by that setback or a few other small hiccups.
