Audi To Revive The A2 As An Affordable EV

Audi will revive the A2 name for its new, distinctively styled entry-level electric model, senior company sources have revealed.
The new model, which will be unveiled before the end of the year, is considered an indirect modern successor to the original from the early 2000s.
The novelty, which will probably have the same E-tron suffix as Audi’s other electric vehicles, is already in the final stages of development before the planned start of sales early next year. It will indirectly replace the A1 and Q2 in Audi’s range. Production of these two models should end at the end of 2026.
With prices starting from around £30,000, it will also become the company’s most affordable electric offering to date, slotting in below the Q4 E-tron, which starts at £47,000. By comparison, the A1 starts at £24,000 and the Q2 at £28,000.
The new A2 was originally supposed to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s 800V SSP platform, but due to lengthy delays with that architecture, it will instead be based on the same variant of the group’s ubiquitous MEB platform as the Volkswagen ID 3.
This model uses a 400V system and rear-wheel drive. With the ID.3, it is offered with batteries from 58 kWh to 79 kWh and power from 168 to 282 HP. The range could exceed the figure of 595 kilometers for the ID. 3 hatchback.
Within Audi, the new A2 is not only considered a premium mini-MPV. Engineers talk about it filling the gap in the market left by the BMW i3, which was produced between 2013 and 2022. They also point to the first- and second-generation Mercedes A-Class, with their space-efficient ‘sandwich’ platform, as an example of where and how the new A2 will be positioned.
