BMW Delivers Skytop To First Owner

When BMW unveiled the Skytop concept in 2024, few anticipated what would follow. The brand soon confirmed the production of a limited series, after which all 50 planned copies were reserved at lightning speed.
That came as quite a surprise, given that the car, which uses the underpinnings of the regular M8 Competition, is believed to have cost upwards of €500,000, and now deliveries to customers have begun.
The first copy was recently delivered to Italian racing car driver Andrea Levy at BMW Welt in Germany, and the new owner shared a short video of the handover on social media.
Levy’s new car closely resembles the original Skytop unveiled at Villa d’Este and will add to his impressive collection, which includes Ferraris, a Lamborghini, a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and a Dallara Stradale.
Although the Skytop has familiar BMW underpinnings, its exterior has been completely customized. The most significant improvement is the inclusion of an open targa-style cockpit with two removable leather-covered roof panels.
Like the original show car, Levy’s is painted silver and features striking rims with an intricate spoke design. The cabin is familiar from the 8 Series, but Levy’s car is covered in new, plush brown-red leather, which certainly makes it more premium.
It’s a little disappointing that BMW hasn’t made any changes to the engine from the M8. As such, the twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine still develops a standard 626 hp and is mated to the usual eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.
BMW claims that the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds, which is certainly not negligible.
About a year after the Skytop, BMW introduced a shooting brake variant called the Speedtop, which was also limited to a total of 70 units.
