Toyota Motor Corporation has finally unveiled the Toyota Century SUV, a chauffeur-driven high-riding luxury vehicle designed to compete with Western-made luxury models like Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga in the Japanese market.
Based on the TNGA-K architecture shared with the Lexus TX and RX, the new flagship SUV is the first Toyota car to wear the Century nameplate after the Japan-only sedan which arrived in 1967 as Toyota’s premium chauffeur-driven car.
On the outside, the Century spots an engraved phoenix emblem, which replaces all Toyota badges, and a bodywork that has a “mirror finish” achieved from “meticulous polishing” of the painted surfaces”.
Other features includes the Genesis-type of split LED headlights and taillights, each consisting of four set-back lamps to give the impression of a gaze full of dignity.
Inside, the Century SUV adopts a four-seat layout with individual rear seats. The first-class cabin is packed with retractable tray tables, smartphone docks, USB charging ports, two 11.6-inch screens, two smartphone-like touchscreen controls, ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof.
Powering the SUV is a 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain, which sends power to all four wheels via an e-CVT gearbox and the E-Four Advanced AWD system. This setup produces a combined 406 hp, and it offers a zero-emission range of up to 69 km (43 miles).
The Toyota Century SUV will be produced at the Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara Plant in Japan, with targeted base sales of 30 units per month in the Japanese market.
At ¥25,000,000 ($169,580), the Toyota Century SUV is priced cheaper when compared to its rival like Rolls-Royce Cullinan or Bentley Bentayga Extended Wheelbase (EWB) Mulliner, which are priced from $350,000 and $339,000 respectively. Toyota has already opened order books and the first deliveries are expected within 2023.
