Volvo XC90 Next-Gen Model Set For 2030 Date In New US Factory

Volvo is investing heavily in its US factory near Charleston, South Carolina. The most interesting news: starting in 2030, a new hybrid is expected to roll off the production line there, presumably the XC90.
Volvo plans to continue investing heavily in its only American car factory in Ridgeville near Charleston. The brand has recently invested $ 1.3 billion, approximately € 1.1 billion, in this factory, where, following the discontinuation of the S60, the Volvo EX90 (recently updated) and Polestar 3 are now being built. Earlier this year it was already announced that the XC60 would be added to the factory’s portfolio. This has everything to do with the import duties introduced by the Trump administration, because the XC60 is the most popular Volvo in the world and the United States. The Swedish brand sold 20 percent more there in 2025 so far than in 2024.
The additional investments are not specified in more detail, but are intended above all to underline that Volvo considers the American market important. From now on, things get more exciting and more speculative. Volvo promises that a new hybrid model will be built in the American factory from 2030. This model will allegedly be ‘designed to meet the specific needs of the American market’, and that is when the cogs start turning. After all, what model better meets American needs than a new XC90? Since this summer, we have known that a new XC90 is coming , although we still have a long wait. Hybrid technology will be more important than ever for that model, and that also aligns with Volvo’s promise of a hybrid from Ridgeville.
The original plan was for the electric EX90 to replace the XC90. That XC90 would continue to exist alongside the EX90 for a while and has also been extensively facelifted, but it now appears that Volvo cannot be satisfied with that. Even when the life cycle of the current XC90 finally comes to an end, there is still a need for a non-electric large SUV. So a new XC90 after all, but more strongly electrified than ever before.
