The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been hand-built in Graz, Austria at Magna Steyr Automobile Company since 1979.
The plant in Graz, Austria isn’t part of Mercedes-Benz’s network of factories but is instead run by Magna Steyr.
At the plant, Magna produces around 100 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon’s a day in two shifts five days a week.
In total, around 25,000 Mercedes-Benz G-Class are produced every year, including about 5,000 for the military.
Over 60% of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon models are sold as high-performance AMG G63 and G65 models.
The high-riding Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which started life as a military truck and also known as Gelandewagen or G-Wagon, was first introduced as a civilian luxury vehicle in the year 1979.
Since then, the legendary boxy military-style luxury SUV has gone to be one of the most popular and most recognized vehicle on the road.
But did you know that Magna Steyr AG & Co KG in Austria has been helping German auto-giant Mercedes-Benz to build the off-roader since its inception over 40 years ago?
A subsidiary of Canadian-based Magna International, the Magna Steyr, with an annual production capacity of approximately 200,000 vehicles, is the largest contract manufacturer for automobiles worldwide.
Magna Steyr, previously part of the Steyr-Daimler-Puch, assembles the Gelandewagen in Austria at a Graz-based facility, where it also makes the BMW 5er and Z4, Jaguar E-Pace and I-Pace, and Toyota GR Supra.
