The Last Example Of The BMW Z4 Has Rolled Off The Magna Steyr Assembly Line

BMW is giving up another model. The last example of the BMW Z4 (G29 generation) rolled off the assembly line at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria.

In a statement to the BMW blog, a company spokesperson confirmed the end of this roadster.

Interestingly, demand for the Z4 increased during the final months of production. Deliveries in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 4.9% compared to the same period last year, reaching 2,555 units. It is reasonable to assume that the convertible’s announced retirement caused a last-minute surge in demand. Although it’s now out of production, the remaining stock should last a while before the car disappears completely.

Sales of the Z4 G29 peaked in 2019, the car’s first full year on the market. That year, BMW sold 15,827 units, but everything went downhill from then on. Demand has been declining to just 9,744 cars in 2025.

Consequently, it is clear why the company is in no rush to bring the new Z car to market. According to BMW Blog’s sources, the next-gen Z4 won’t be coming anytime soon.

Z cars have come and gone over the years, with production gaps between some generations. When the Z1 disappeared in 1991, the first-generation Z3 didn’t arrive until 1995. Then in 1999 came the beautiful Z8, paving the way for the Z4 E85/E86 (2003-2008) and the Z4 E89 (2009-2016). The Z4 G29 didn’t hit the production line until 2018, and now it’s gone. Its sibling, the Toyota Supra, will also be retired soon. Unlike BMW, Toyota has already promised to bring back the iconic name.
