Ford Explorer Goes RWD For 2022 With New ST Trim That Outputs 400hp
The 2022 Ford Explorer ST will get a rear-wheel-drive option, the automaker confirmed last week Friday in a press release. It’s one of a handful of changes to the three-row mid-size SUV for the new model year.
The new two-wheel-drive ST gets the same 3.0-litre Ecoboost V6 and 10-speed automatic transmission as the all-wheel-drive car but sends its 400 hp and 415lb-ft to the rear wheels only. Ford hasn’t issued any performance figures for the RWD model, but it’s likely that it might be a shade slower to 60mph due to its inferior traction, but a little quicker beyond that point thanks to unspecified weight advantage.
The Explorer ST exterior comes complete with a blacked-out front grille, dual exhaust tips, 20-inch machined alloy wheels, and dark-tinted headlights and taillights. Rounding off the changes on the outside is the glossy black model name’s lettering on the hood.
Stepping inside and you will be greeted by Ebony Black ActiveX seats with suede Miko inserts that are heated in the first row, a heated sport steering wheel, and red contrast stitching. Tech includes a 12-speaker sound system from Bang & Olufsen, voice-activated navigation, wireless charging, a surround-view camera, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. You also get a 10.1-inch touchscreen that comes equipped with apple car play and android auto. Iis again equipped with Ford’s CoPilot360 Assist+ suite of driver aids that includes evasive steering assist, and adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist.
