Freelander 8, the first model From the “Freelander” brand created by JLR-Chery JV debut at Beijing Auto Show.
“Freelander” brand will operate independently from JLR’s existing brands and Chery’s current product lines.
Freelander 8 takes design inspiration from the 90s Freelander – the smallest model in JLR’s line-up produced between 1997 and 2015.
While a product from a Chery-JLR JV, the Freelander brand will operate independently from JLR’s existing four brands (Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar) and Chery’s current product lines.
First previewed as 97 Concept at the Shanghai Motor Show in March, the Freelander 8 takes design inspiration from the iconic Freelander – the smallest model in JLR’s line-up produced between 1997 and 2015.
Highlights on the exterior include a large side-view mirrors, roof racks, rectangular headlights and a large “FREELANDER” engraving at the front and rear – the latter, complemented by the “8 Super” and “i-ATS” inscriptions.
Inside, the cabin boasts a dashboard-wide digital upper screen plus a large floating tablet-style touchscreen in the center console with an array of conventional buttons.
While the vehicles under the “Freelander” brand will be designed by JLR, they will be powered exclusively by electrified Chery drivetrains and built by the Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR) joint venture in China.
“Freelander” brand plans to launch a new model every six months over the next three years designed solely for domestic market, though there are plans for export to overseas markets, including Middle East and Europe. Its first model, the Freelander 8, is expected to launch in China in H2 2026, with a global rollout to follow in other markets
