GMC Takes The Lid Off The Rugged Yet Luxurious 2023 Canyon Pickup Truck

The launch of the latest GMC Canyon shouldn’t be a surprise as Chevrolet recently released its cousin in the guise of Colorado some weeks back and with that let’s focus on this latest model.

The 2023 Canyon will be produced in Wentzville, Missouri, early next year it will come in Elevation, AT4, Denali, and AT4X trims. As with the new Colorado, the Canyon gets an overhaul of the design. It’s down to one bed and cab configuration (short-bed, crew cab), and it features a longer wheelbase with the front axle pushed forward. The Canyon does get a variety of unique design features, though. It has its own front fascia with a tall, rectangular grille. LED lighting is standard on all Canyon models all the way around.

GMC is eager to stay on the more luxurious end of the mid-size truck market, hitting the Canyon with a spritz of luxury. Each trim line comes with a colour scheme unique to that trim. The Canyon sits on a new, wider track than previous years and comes with a 2.0-inch lift on Elevation, AT4, and Denali trims, with a 3.0-inch lift reserved for the AT4X.

Inside, GMC has significantly elevated the in-cabin experience with the new Canyon. AT4X and Denali feature a segment-exclusive head-up display, an 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster, and an 11.3-inch touchscreen that lives in what looks like single unified housing. The dash design is horizontally focused, with squat layers and an abundance of materials sandwiched into the tight space. There’s leather, real wood on the Denali, carbon fibre on the AT4X, and plastic that’s either shiny or painted to look anodized. GMC deserves praise for its use of detailing and colour on both Denali and AT4X, too.

The Canyon’s premium positioning is reflected under the hood as the model is offered exclusively with a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission, which can be paired to rear- or four-wheel drive. The company declined to give fuel economy estimates, but the Canyon has a towing capacity of up to 3,493 kg and a payload capacity that maxes out at 744 kg. A limited-slip differential also comes standard on the AT4 and Denali.
