If the Nissan-Honda merger becomes successful, it may lead to the creation of World’s 3rd largest automaker by 2026.

Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda has revealed that Nissan never asked them for merger after two anonymous ‘senior official’ reportedly claim it needed financial backing from the Japanese or US governments to make it through 2025.

Following the report, Nissan and Honda officially announced start of discussions and considerations towards the establishment of a joint holding company, which may lead to the creation of World’s 3rd largest automaker by 2026.

“[Nissan] did not approach Toyota about any mergers,” Toyoda told Inside EVs through an interpreter at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, adding that :

“But even if they had considered that, it would definitely be violating anti-monopoly laws. So maybe they might have considered it, but decided not to because of that.”

If the Nissan-Honda merger becomes successful, both companies said they aim to integrate their respective management resources such as knowledge and technologies.

“For me, it’s quite exciting, because I’m looking forward to [seeing] how they’re going to cooperate between each other and how they’re going to develop more competitive products,” Toyoda said.

“If those kinds of exciting products, competitive products, come out [of this merger], I think it’s a good thing for the competition not only in Japan but for the world.”
