GM Recently Eliminated Over 1,000 Jobs At A Plant Where It Added 50 Robots
Some robots at GM’s Factory Zero seem to be treated better than the workers who construct automobiles next to them. GM began attaching more cooperative robots to the manufacturing line a few weeks after softening its EV commitments and laying off over 1,000 workers at the factory.
GM is not an exception to the trend of automakers looking to automation and artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce labour costs and maintain domestic production. James Cotton, president of UAW Local 22, who represents the plant’s employees, claims that GM has installed about fifty additional “cobots” there.
Along the assembly line, the machines connect different parts to automobiles while working side by side with humans. Cotton claims that the members themselves are losing their jobs.
He claimed that union members are “disgusted” by the newcomers’ increasing presence at the facility and identified them as Fanuc-made cobots.
He said to Crain’s Detroit, “It’s always a concern when you see a robot going to a plant, especially after they have laid off over a thousand humans.” “They claim it’s the wave of the future, and if that’s true, they’re depriving people of their jobs.” Cotton added that the union has complained to GM about the deployment and expressed worries about machinery operating close to people.
The robots are being installed as part of GM’s drive to integrate more cutting-edge technologies into its operations, according to GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly. Additionally, GM stated that the robots maintain “operations flexible and competitive” while also enhancing safety and ergonomics. As part of its larger automation effort, the automaker revealed that dozens of the units have lately been added to the plant.
Half The Hours It Used To Take
Automation is a disruptive trend whose entire impact is still unknown, according to Masters, who told Crain’s Detroit that the number of labour hours required to produce a vehicle has decreased by about 50 to 70 percent since the 1980s.
A few years ago, GM’s Factory Zero—formerly known as the Detroit-Hamtramck site—was renovated to produce only electric vehicles. However, the site’s shifts have been reduced, and employees have been laid off due to the US’s restrictions on EV demand. Furthermore, there have been several pauses in production. Before the UAW’s 2028 contract negotiations, the matter is anticipated to get major attention.
