BMW Explains Why It Added All-Wheel Drive To The M2 At Last
BMW has introduced the all-wheel-drive M2 xDrive to meet high demand from U.S. customers in the Northeast and Midwest. CEO Frank van Meel noted that RWD is impractical for these regions, leading to the decision to expand the xDrive system to the M2 Coupe.
The decision to introduce the M2 xDrive underscores the ongoing influence of the United States market on BMW’s product strategy. This is evidenced by historical precedents, such as the provision of manual transmissions exclusively for North American consumers in the E60 and F10 M5 models, as well as the current North American exclusivity of the M3 CS Handschalter.
Although U.S. demand served as a primary catalyst for the development of the M2 xDrive, BMW has reported substantial interest from Switzerland. Similar to the northern regions of the United States, the geographic and climatic conditions in Switzerland—specifically frequent and significant snowfall—render an all-wheel-drive performance vehicle a practical necessity.
Consistent with the performance enhancements observed in the M3 and M4 lineups, the M2 xDrive delivers superior acceleration compared to its rear-wheel-drive predecessor, achieving 60 mph in 3.6 seconds (or 3.3 seconds with a one-foot rollout). For comparison, the previous rear-wheel-drive M2 attained the same speed in 3.9 seconds when equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW’s performance figures are probably conservative, and empirical testing may demonstrate acceleration times closer to three seconds flat.
The M2 xDrive will supersede the standard rear-wheel-drive M2 model equipped with an automatic transmission. Nevertheless, BMW will maintain the availability of a rear-wheel-drive variant paired with a manual gearbox. Both configurations will retain the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged S58 inline-six engine, which generates 473 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.
