The Lagos State government will flag off the 37-kilometre Red Line system (LRMT) before the end of this year, following the announcement that the Blue Line rail will fully commence commercial operations on Monday September 4th, 2023.

This was disclosed by Gboyega Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday August 31st, during an interview programme on TVC News.

While reacting to a recent report by Brand Finance City Index 2023, which ranked Lagos as the fifth best African city with high desirability by people to live, work and invest, Akosile said :

“Rome was not built in a day, it is a gradual process. By Monday, next week (September 6th, 2003), we are going to be flagging off the commercial operations of the Blue Line rail from Marina to Mile 2.

“By the time it starts working, it will add up to the perception index of Lagos as a state where you can come and have peace of mind transportation-wise.”

Recall that Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had in March 2023, went on a tour of the Red Line train station and overpass bridge at Ikeja to assess the level of completion of the infrastructure.

Speaking with journalists after an inspection tour of the project and the vehicular overpass bridge at Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu said :

“Today, I was at the Ikeja Mega Terminal of the Red Line to inspect the level of work that has been put into the construction.

“The terminal serves as a multimodal point of exchange, bridging the gap between the Red Line and BRT buses on the Ikeja, Oshodi-Abule Egba axis.

He added that the Ikeja Mega Terminal of the Red Line will have the capacity to transport over 1,000,000 (1 Million) passengers daily when it becomes fully operational.

“When in full operation, this station will process about one million passengers per day.

The 37-kilometre Red Line system (LRMT) will have eight stations and it is expected to reduce travel by over two hours. It will traverse on standard gauge from Agbado to Oyingbo, in the first phase, while terminating at Iddo in the second phase.

While the Lagos Blue Line will use Electric Multiple Units (EMUs), the Red Line system (LRMT) from Agbado to Ebute Metta will use trains powered by Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), also known as diesel.
