Lewis Hamilton’s First-winning Mercedes F1 Car Sells For Record-breaking Price Of $18.8m At Auction
F1 car Lewis Hamilton drove to his first Formula One win for Mercedes sold for $18.8 million an RM Sotheby’s auction.
Hamilton drove this V-8 powered car 14 of the 19 races in the 2013 season when he raced it to victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
RM Sotheby’s had expected the Formular One vehicle to sell for between $10 million and $15 Million.
Another Hamilton’s Championship-winning car, a McLaren MP4-25A sold for $5.7 million during a RM Sotheby’s auction back in July 2021.
One lucky bidder on Friday November 17th payed $18.8 million to own Lewis Hamilton’s first-winning ‘Silver Arrow’, a 2013 Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 W04, at a RM Sotheby’s auction block during the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Hamilton drove this V-8 powered car 14 of the 19 races in the 2013 season when he raced it to victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, making it one of 82 victories he has had with Mercedes, and of 103 over the span of his career thus far.
“Lewis Hamilton’s first championship Mercedes F1 car took yet another pole position, this time breaking records as the most expensive F1 car ever sold,” said Mercedes-Benz.
RM Sotheby’s, the world’s leading collector car auction house, had expected the Formular One vehicle to sell for between $10 million and $15 Million. It was one of many ultra-rare Mercedes cars featured at the exclusive RM Sotheby’s Auction in Las Vegas.
According to RM Sotheby’s, it is the only Mercedes F1 vehicle from the modern era not owned by Mercedes, by team principal and Chief Executive Officer Toto Wolff, or by Hamilton himself.
Another Hamilton’s Championship-winning car, a McLaren MP4-25A with chassis no. 01, sold for $5.7 million during a RM Sotheby’s auction back in July 2021.
The record-breaking $18.8 million price tag makes Lewis Hamilton’s 2013 Mercedes-AMG Petronas the most expensive modern F1 car sold at auction.
But a 1954 Mercedes W196R sold by Bonhams for $29,650,095 in 2013 remains the most expensive F1 car ever to be publicly auction. The Mercedes W196R took Juan Manuel Fangio to the second of his five Formula 1 titles.
