Mazda has prepared a special version of the MX-5 Roadster for the Tokyo Motor Show, with the car being called the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R in Japan. Based on the soft-top version, the sporty convertible has an assortment of upgrades inside and out, including underneath the hood.

Mazda Spirit Racing will become the brand’s new high-performance division, replacing Mazdaspeed. The Mazda Spirit Racing name has been used in Japan’s Super Taikyu series since 2021. This special model will be the division’s first road car.

The car has a revised front end with a new splitter and a special badge on the hood. There is also Aero Gray paint, decals, a set of black Rays TE37 six-spoke wheels, Yokohama Advan AD09 tires, Bilstein shock absorbers, Brembo brakes, red brake callipers, a Fujitsubo exhaust system, redesigned side skirts, a rear spoiler, as well as Recaro seats and a sports steering wheel with Alcantara.

Under the hood is a 2.0-litre engine (boosted from 181 hp to 197 hp), paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The series is limited to 200 copies (at 7 million yen or 43,105 euros per piece). For those who can’t get their hands on the 12R, there’s also the mass-production Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster. Customer deliveries for this model will commence around mid-2025.
