Mercedes-Benz T-Class Minivan Unveiled As A More Premium Citan Tourer
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the T-Class, a new compact-commercial-van-cum-MPV based on the second-generation Mercedes Citan van. Like the Citan, the T-Class is based on the Renault Kangoo and both cars will be built at Renault’s Maubeuge plant in northern France.
At first glance, the T-Class can be easily mistaken for the Citan Tourer which is the passenger version of the Citan Panel Van. A closer look however reveals subtle design changes bringing it closer to the design language of Mercedes’ passenger vehicle range. These include a set of optional 17-inch alloy wheels (standard 16-inch wheels), thinner chrome bezels on the grille, a slightly altered black area in the front bumper that no longer houses the foglights, and body-coloured mirrors.
The standard equipment of the new T-Class includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen display which provides the same Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) functionality as the A-Class, including the “Hey, Mercedes” conversational speech search prompt. Smartphone integration, multifunctional steering wheel, keyless entry and engine start, air conditioning, and interior LED lighting are among the many features equipped with the T-Class. Two equipment lines are available – Style and Progressive, each with a different take on the interior and exterior trim, different options list, and different styling elements. Seven airbags can be found in every single new T-Class, regardless of the trim level.
Power comes from a choice of two petrol or two diesel engines, ranging from the 94bhp T 160 d to the 129bhp T 180, all with front-wheel drive. Stop-start helps to save fuel, while six-speed manual or seven-speed twin-clutch automatic gearboxes will be offered.
A larger and roomier longer-wheelbase version offering up to seven seats is planned to join the line-up in 2023.
