Mercedes CEO And German Chancellor Takes A Spin In Self-driving S-Class During Trip To China

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz took the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class ultra-luxury sedan for a test ride in Beijing on Thursday February 26 during his official visit to China, accompanied by executives from approximately 30 leading German companies.
Thursday’s showcase comes few months after Mercedes-Benz announced a another Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving project in cooperation with China’s Momenta to develop a Robotaxi experience based on the new flagship S‑Class sedan.

“This is amazing. I think it’s one of the future technologies for mobility,” Merz said after experiencing the urban and highway pilot driver-assist system co-developed by Mercedes-Benz and Chinese tech firm, Momenta.
“We had the privilege of offering Chancellor Merz a ride in one of our most iconic models, which combines the best of both worlds: German engineering and Chinese digital expertise,” Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, who was seated at the driver’s seat during the autonomous ride, said on his LinkedIn profile.
“And while I, as the driver, remain responsible, the car handles tasks such as starting, stopping, turning, overtaking, merging, turning around, and of course, parking,” Mercedes-Benz CEO noted.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to showcase the outstanding work of our engineers and to accompany Chancellor Merz on his trip to China – a place that is far more than just the world’s largest and most dynamic automotive market.”
Merz also visited Unitree Robotics during his official visit to China, where he watched humanoid robots perform different tasks and “was impressed by their agile movements.”
“The fact that two of the three largest economies trade with each other unfolds great power and prosperity. If this dynamic is balanced and designed reliably, our countries benefit greatly,” Merz said during his trip aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between Germany and China
